World map: income inequality
The Gini index runs from 0 (everyone earns the same) to 100 (one person earns everything). In each country's most recent survey, the range runs from Slovakia at 23.8 (2023) to Namibia at 59.1 (2015). Darker red means more unequal; hover any country for its value.

How to read this chart
Each country shows its most recent household survey, so values come from different years — check the survey year in the table below before comparing two countries. Some countries measure income and others consumption, which are not perfectly comparable; for a series standardized across those differences, see the SWIID country comparison. Background: why inequality differs so much across countries and how inequality is measured. You can also explore this dataset against others in the Data Lab.
Methodology
Gini index on a 0–100 scale (0 = perfect equality) estimated by the World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform from primary household surveys. Surveys measure income in some countries and consumption in others, and survey years vary widely — each country on the map shows its most recent survey, so values are not all from the same year and are not perfectly comparable across measurement types. For a series standardized across those differences, see the SWIID comparison page.
Coverage: 171 countries, survey years 1963–2025. WDI updates several times a year; we re-sync at least every 120 days. License: CC-BY 4.0. Download the data (JSON).
